Your Best & Worst couponing experiences in 2009!

This last week of 2009, I would love to hear your best and worst couponing experiences. Just email them to me and I'll post them throughout the week.

The best way I know to encourage others who are wanting to try couponing is to tell them our success stories (and sometimes our mistakes). So if you had a great experience this year with coupons, deals and savings, now's your time to share!

If you want to send picture of you, that'd be great. I'll post it with your story.

Books, CDs and DVDs - How much do you spend each year?

How much do you spend on DVDs, CDs and Books in a year?

If the answer is close to $0 - then hooray for you! You must know your local library really well! Our library not only offers books for free checkout but also up to 3 DVDs at a time and several CDs at once as well. We love our library!

However, if your answer to that question is "Hmmmm...... I probably spend a bunch!" then this post is for you.

Our family loves to listen to music, read books and watch movies but truthfully the kids get tired of the movies sometimes and they are just taking up space on the shelf.

So how do we keep the selection fresh so nobody gets bored with own personal library? By swapping with people all over the country.

If you've read this blog long, you probably already know all about swaptree but please allow me to remind you about it once more.

We have completed over 85 swaps in the past 3 years! That means that for less than $2 each, we have been able to try out Disney DVD's (Little Mermaid brand new!, Peter Pan), Little Einsteins, Barbie movies, Action movies, Harry Potter hardback books (with no markings), a brand new book Eat This Not That, bestsellers like Why Do Men Have Nipples, Would You Rather books..... I can't even remember all we have tried out.

We have used the DVDs for Christmas and birthday presents many times, cleared out our shelves, and even bought used books, cds or dvds at yard sales to try then posted them on swaptree.

My point????? Swaptree really works for us! We save tons of money and get to try out new books, movies and music.

Are you interested yet? Click here to see step by step directions to get you started. If you have questions, feel free to email me. I love this site and really want to see others save money on their media and books too!

*One note, if you want to trade game system games, I suggest you don't put anything on your want list except other game system games so you don't get stuck trading a high value wii game for a kids cd or cartoon dvd.

Nestle Very Best Baby Club

I nursed all 3 of my kids but I still signed up for the Nestle Very Best Baby Club. They send you coupon books every few months as soon as your baby is born till at least his 1st birthday. When I received them, the coupons allowed me to 'buy' free formula for all 3 of my babies. Even though I didn't use formula, it was nice to have it in the house for that rare emergency or to pass on to my other friends who were using formula.

Merry Christmas!

Oh what fun it is to look for deals, save money and find free stuff! But there's a time and a place to know when to stop and just enjoy the other side of life. So tonight and tomorrow - I hope all my readers, friends and family have fun spending time with family!

Merry Christmas!

***For those of you who have free time tomorrow and are going to be on the computer, I have found some cool deals that you may have missed but are still available. I'll have them posted in the morning - just in case you need a break from the hoopla of Christmas morning :-)

Kroger price guarantee - just a reminder

Just a reminder: Kroger generally has a price guarantee policy. If your item scans at the wrong price, you could get the item free. Just point out the wrong price to the cashier and have them check the price on the shelf. If it is wrong, they will usually just give you the item for free. (not always but usually).

Shop early or shop last minute????

I have been shopping for Christmas all year! I love planning and finding the deals all year long. That way when Christmas week gets here, I don't have to fight the crowds or pay last minute prices.

But..... I know some people love to save all their shopping for the last minute.

One of the scary things about shopping early is that there is always 'just one more deal' that looks good. But for me, I don't spend money after my shopping is done . I can relax this week knowing that my kids are going to have some cool stuff under the tree that I didn't have to pay much money for because I was a smart shopper all year long.

What's your shopping style? Do you shop all year or save it all for the last minute? Are you able to stop when your list is done or do you keep looking for that 'one last deal'?

A surpringly great place to stock up on stuffed animals!

My kids love stuffed animals! (I should put that in bold, italics, underline and caps!) However, I refuse to buy them at new prices in the stores. I also refuse to buy used animals that look like they have been drooled on, spit up on or loved to death by another child.

Here comes the fun of GoodWill! Today we stopped in to buy a reward toy for my son who is almost potty trained! We hit the jackpot!

1 Webkinz elephant, 1 Webkinz pinto pony, Animal Ally Unicorn (from ToysRus), even a Build A Bear Bunny with real Build a Bear shirt. These animals were all brand new - with tags! I don't know what people were thinking to throw them out but we were thrilled!
Each animal was a huge .50 each!!!! Several came home to be instantly loved and enjoyed but a few others made it home secretly so they will magically appear under the tree at Christmas.

My point? Don't discount the treasures you can find at Goodwill or Salvation Army. We have found some really amazing things at Goodwill! What's your best find? Here's your chance to brag a bit!

Passing on the savings....

3 examples of how I passed on the savings to strangers this past week:
  1. I had a ToysRus $5 off $25 coupon that I couldn't use because I didn't spend enough (My total was less than $4), so instead of throwing the coupon away, I noticed that the lady in line behind me had a huge cart of stuff. I asked her if she wanted the coupon. Of course, she was thrilled! Her savings - $5!
  2. I had 8 $1.00 coupons off Target brand wipes - making each packet of wipes .27 each. But I didn't need those. (I only used 3.) Since they were expiring in 2 days, I saw a lady with a small child. I asked her if she wanted the coupons. She was very pleased!
  3. In Old Navy, I had a $10 free gift card plus I had a 15% off coupon. I was not allowed to use both, so what did I do? I turned to the people behind me and offered the 15% coupon to them. They acted like I had given them such a huge gift!

Is this weird? Doesn't everyone share their coupons when they can't use them? What kind of response did you get when you passed on savings?

Lowes Build & Grow - Follow up

We went to the Lowes Build and Grow Gingerbread House Activity today! It was a great free activity for the kids. They were able to build the gingerbread house, plus they received the free Lowes apron, goggles and a badge for the event that I can attach to their apron. All for the great price of FREE!

Next week, Dec 12, they can build a Christmas ornament. So guess where my kids want to be next Saturday? At Lowes, of course!

Here's a link to sign up for next Saturday's free clinic.

I signed up all 3 of my kids even though my youngest is only 2 1/2. He wasn't interested in building the house today but we were able to bring the kit home so he can build it later. The Lowes clinician said if the parents are willing to help the kids, he didn't care about the age.

Schedule a free phone call from Santa!

When is a good deal not a good deal?

Today someone started to tell me about a 'great deal on toys at such and such store'. For me, there are probably not very many 'great deals on toys' that will get me excited now because I have already finished my toy shopping. That said.... I would still pick up a great deal on a toy if the toy was free but I'm not going to spend more money on toys just because it is a 'great deal'.

So, when is A good deal not a good deal?

  1. I can't afford it.
  2. I don't need it and I don't have someone who does need it.
  3. I have to drive out of the way to get it.

Do you have deals that you let pass because they just 'aren't a good deal for you?' I surely hope so! If we all hit every deal, we'd not only be extremely tired but we'd have no space in our house.

Happy deal hunting - but hunt wisely!

Consumer Village - Surveys for $$$

There are alot of survey sites around that claim to send you surveys and then you get money or gift cards. Alot of them take forever and just aren't worth my time. I've joined many but only participate in a few.

Here is one of my favorites: Consumer Village!

I just deposited a $5.00 gift card into my Amazon account. This will go nicely with a Christmas present I am wanting to buy my husband.

Here's how you can get started.
  • Sign up here.
  • You will get survey invitations occasionally in your email box. There aren't very many per month so it doesn't flood your account.
  • When you take a survey and qualify you will receive tokens in your account.
  • As soon as you hit 500 tokens, you get sent a code number worth $5 to deposit in your account.
  • Most of the time, even if you don't qualify for the survey, you will still be given a few tokens just for trying.

*Just a note: Sometimes when I refer you to a company they tell me thanks by giving me referral credits or extra tokens. Not here. This in no way benefits me by you signing up. I just know I love getting the extra gift card $ and I want you to have this opportunity too.

New ecoupons at Upromise

It's the beginning of the month, so there are new ecoupons at to load to your Kroger or CVS card. (If you are new to Upromise, here's my post telling you all the details.)

These ecoupons don't save you money at the store; instead they accumulate toward your childs college expenses down the road.

I just heard from someone this week who is up to $80 in their fund (and their daughter is not even 10 yet!) She's got time to help that figure grow! We're still around $10 in our account but I'm hoping with these ecoupons it will grow to at least buy a text book by the time they hit college. We'll see.......

Free Christmas postcard from gmail

Click here to send a real paper postcard for free - paid for by Gmail. They will mail it to the person of your choice.

Prescription coupons - Wow!

I had saved a coupon for $10 gift card with NEW or Transferred prescription to Target. I don't even have a Target pharmacy near me. Here's where it gets fun!

Today my daughter had to go to the doctor for a very minor illness. She was given a prescription. (BTW.... she is almost completely fine by now and probably would have been fine even without going to the doc this time. Oh well..... with kids you just never know huh?) I took it to my local CVS. Got the medicine, gave them the Target coupon (they take all competitor prescription coupons) and they gave me a free $10 CVS gift card!

True, I had to pay for the doc visit and the medicine but since that was unavoidable, I love being able to turn around and make some extra money!

Note to self...... save ALL prescription coupons just in case one of the kids gets sick and I end up needing medicine.

Getting Green $$$$ - by Going Green!

Did you know you can get free gift cards from Office Depot by recycling printer ink cartridges?

I took 5 off brand used ink cartridges to OD today and they applied it to my Work/Life Rewards account. (Get a free account here or ask about it in the store.) You may turn in up to 5 a day. For each cartridge you will get a $3.00 credit! As soon as your account gets to at least $10, they will send you a Office Depot gift card the following month!

Too good to be true? That's what I think. But you better believe I'm going to be saving those cartridges and see how many more I can recycle.

The worse thing that can happen is that I don't get the money. At least I'm not putting the cartridges in the trash. I'll let you know if I get a reward card in January!

More free Money from - update

Today I checked my email and I have an email from that says"Cyber Monday Deal - Your $10 gift is enclosed!" Since there are no magazines I'm interested in buying right now, I love the fact I can redeem this for a $10 check.

I scrolled down to the very bottom of the email and in really small letters is says 'redeem for cash'. I clicked on that link and entered my name, address and gift code number from the email.

I got this reply on the screen:
Thank you for visiting to redeem a Cash Card.
A check in the amount of $10.00 will be sent to the postal address provided.

Did you forget to sign up? Here's my post with directions! Sign up today so you will get this great offer next time. (This is my 3rd time since March that I have received this!)

Completely random - Megaman Battlechips

I have no clue what these are but I have 5 of them. Somehow I 'inherited' them from a yard sale. They say Megaman Battlechip. I've looked on ebay and amazon and I think they go with some kind of Megaman characters. If you want them for your kids, just email me. Otherwise, they're going in the goodwill basket this week.

Time to thank the CVS cashiers

I'm a huge believer in saying thanks to those who do something nice for me..... so here is my thanks to the Danville CVS cashiers. Everytime I check out at CVS, the cashiers have smiles. They seem to think it's cool that I am able to save money by using coupons.

When you have a good cashier, tell them thanks!

So, thanks - Danville CVS!

"Limited Warranty' - 2 great words to see on a product!

If you have read my blog long, you have seen that I often request that companies honor their warranties when I have a product fail. I have had my water filter replaced twice (for free) because it was defective. I have received replacement scales, a replacement laser pointer mouse, new water hose, money back for 4 cans of deck sealer paint because it chipped off completely & a couch completely replaced - just to name a few.

When a company puts the words '1 year limited warranty' or 3 years or 7 years - I feel like they should honor their word.

That's why when we had to buy new Christmas lights today for our tree I loved seeing the words '3 year limited warranty'! I looked on the box to see what the requirements are to have the lights replaced and made sure I kept the receipt and the upc codes for all 4 boxes of lights. I really hope these new LED lights work like they're supposed to, but just in case they don't - I'm ready.

*** Just a note..... I NEVER claim a warranty replacement unless the item truly is defective. If I see 'product guarantee' or 'satisfaction guarantee', I don't just send in for a replacement because I don't like a product. I would feel very unethical about claiming a free replacement for something that really did what it was supposed to do.

I get to play today - while the rest of the shopping world goes crazy.

Today is Black Friday but I'm not going near a store. I get to play and decorate for Christmas, knowing that my Christmas shopping is practically done. I don't have to mess with Black Friday crowds, don't have to be in the shopping craze or fight with someone over a toy in the aisle. I can feel very pleased with myself (almost smug if you please) that I was able to buy my kids Christmas toys for very little out of pocket.

How have I done that? I have spent the entire year watching sales, accumulating swagbucks, using coupons, matching sales and being as smart as possible.

Do you get to relax today while the shopping world goes crazy? I know some people get a huge thrill of hunting and scoring a great find on Black Friday - but for me..... I'm quite content to stay at home today.

If you haven't gotten your Christmas shopping list checked off yet, there's still time to snag some really good deals.

Here's a couple of tips.....
  1. Make sure you are getting your swagbucks every day! If you haven't signed up yet, you are missing out on free money. Here's a post with more information. It is slow going at first but soon you start to really see them add up. (We were able to buy a $100 Lego Star Wars set for my son for less than $10!!! by using swagbucks and sending in a rebate!) - and if you spill that secret to my son, I'll be forever upset :-)
  2. There are still tons of toy coupons on the coupon button (star wars, my little pony, potato head)
  3. Fisher Price is still offering $5 coupons for Trio Builder Toys (you can get them for free with that coupon at Kmart still!)
  4. You can still get $5 free at Kohls if you sign up for their newsletter. It takes about 7 days to get it in your email box. (If you signed up already with your mail email address, use your alternate email or create a new email account).
  5. Sign up for swaptree and trade your old dvds or cds to get something new you can give a nephew, son, or friend for a great Christmas present for less than $2.00
Happy Black Friday!

$1.00 coupon off 2 BirdEye frozen vegetables

Click here for a $1.00 coupon off 2 BirdEye Lightly sauced frozen vegetables

Where is the coupon button on the blog????

Here is where you can find the coupon button that I often refer to in my posts! It's always on the right column of the blog - a small square. If you click on the button you will be able to print off tons of money saving coupons (including the $5 Star Wars coupon, $5 My Little Pony, Coast, Nivea, Dole Fruit and lots more!

Just a note about this coupon button: You can get to the same place by clicking on the web link ( OR you can click on my coupon button (the gray square with blue highlights (follow the red arrow above) and help me out at the same time. Every time someone clicks and prints coupons from my blog instead of just clicking on the link I get a tiny (very tiny) percent. It takes about 10 coupon prints for me to get a quarter but the way my mind and budget work..... I love it!

2 Wii games for under $5

OK.... so you want to know how I just got 2 new Wii games for our family for less than $5.oo total? Easy! I swapped them. I am mailing a game I don't want and someone is sending me something I do want.

If you have DVDs, books, CD's, or games you don't want, you can post them at swaptree. Then you make a quick list of everything you would possibly want. Then Swaptree does the work. As soon as they find a match, you get an email asking if you will accept the trade.

*One complaint I have heard about swaptree is that you might be asked to swap your high value Wii game for a book or cd. We found a way to fix that. My husband has a swaptree account where we only list wii games and I have a regular 'other' stuff account. He lists the games that we no longer want and puts on his want list the Wii games we do want. That way, it is a fair swap. We have tried out quite a few games this way!

Need more info about swaptree? Read my original post here...

Aveeno Baby Shampoo - BzzAgent Review

I am a BzzAgent and recently I was sent a full size bottle of Aveeno Baby Shampoo to try out and review. So...... here's my quick review.

The shampoo is 'natural wheat, oat and vitamin' so it was very gentle, didn't cause tears and was easy to rinse out (all important things in my kids opinion). I didn't think it had a particular smell - good or bad. Personally, I like kids shampoo that smells fruity when they are clean.

Overall, a great shampoo but not one I'll buy unless it is on sale and I have coupons.

Interested in becoming a bzzagent so you can get free stuff to try out? Just send me an email and I'll send you a link.

Not a coupon - but a tip to make life easier!

Just a quick tip to make life easier.....

Alot of samples and coupons require you to register an email address. I have 2 email accounts. One for regular email and the other for my samples/deals and coupon request. That way I don't get tons of junk in my regular account.

I also use the same password for every single one of my sample/coupon sites. That way I don't have to search to remember a pesky unique password for each account.

This makes my coupon/sample request process go much quicker.

Save $$$ on gift wrapping

I am almost embarrassed to write this tip: surely everyone does this already? Oh well.... just in case...
Since we are having a 5 year old birthday party today, I wrapped presents last night. That got me thinking. What is my #1 $$$$ saving tip for wrapping presents?

Simple! I use the same gift bags for the family birthdays every year. That's right. Natalie has gotten her presents for the past 3 years in the very same gift bags: Winnie the Pooh, Care Bear, sparkly pink...

Aveda Birthday club

Join Aveda's Birthday Program today and get a free, full-size product on your birthday!

Today was the first day I had ever been in the Aveda store. (I called the 800 number on the card to check for a location. They are located in the Lexington mall closest to me). Honestly, I thought it was kind of expensive but I will definitely go back the next time I get a free card in the mail!

Build A Bear Workshop

Build A Bear Workshop - quite the fun adventure! I've heard that its next to impossible to get out of the store without spending a ton of money..... but Natalie went today for the first time and had a ball.

For those of you who don't know how it works.... here's the scoop.

  • Pick out your animal. The basic bear cost $10.00; bunny, dog or turkey - $12; then the animals go up from there.
  • Decide whether you want a sound. (starts at $5.00 and goes up). I didn't give Natalie this option since I know she doesn't like to cuddle at night with anything that wakes her up with noises. She didn't even realize it was an option.
  • Bring your bear to life. They stuff the bear. Natalie picked the heart. This was cool. She had to rub the heart and go through a whole process of 'giving the bunny a heart'. - really cool! Then she got to decide if the bunny was filled just right.
  • Give her new bunny a bath and brush it.
  • Now the fun part...... picking out clothes. Full outfits cost start around $12.00. Individual shirts/pants etc are $6.00 each. Panties/underwear are $3.50. We didn't look at all the extra accessories like phone, guitar, hats, glasses etc. There were enough choices with just the clothes. I told Natalie I would buy 1 and she could buy a 2nd piece. At age 5, she was so thrilled that 2 decisions about clothes was more than enough. They even have 'dressing areas' for the animals so you can try the clothes on the animal. Fun.
  • Once she decided on the clothes, we went to the computer to name the animal and fix the birth certificate.
  • You get to pick out hair bows/ribbons for the animal for free.
Now it's time to pay.......
  • Bunny - 12.00
  • pajama dress - 6.00
  • panties - 3.50
Total: $22.00
Use $5.00 off any animal $10.oo or more (from recent newspapers)
Use $5.00 gift certificate that comes in the mail when you sign your kids up for the email club
Final cost: $12.43 ($6.00 of Natalie's birthday money and $6.43 out of my pocket).

My opinion? Worth every penny!

  • 1 Build A Bear Bunny with dress, panty and ribbons - $12.43
(My daughter, Natalie, used $6.00 from her birthday money gifts and I chipped in the other $6.43)
I'm going to give more details about BAB in the next post. Read here.
  • 1 piece of grilled chicken for me at Chick Fil A = FREE
Remember last summer when Chick Fil a was giving away a free sandwich coupon? I just asked the cashier if i could have a piece of chicken instead of the sandwhich. No problem.
  • 1 chicken nugget meal with chocolate milk from Chick Fil A = FREE
I used a free meal coupon from when my parents attended a grand opening and won free meal tickets! Thanks Mom & Dad!
  • 20 minutes of playtime at the playground in the middle of the mall = FREE
  • $5 coupon for Things Remembered - donated to the next customer. I couldn't find anything less than $15 so I asked the clerk to give it to the next customer. I can't see paying money for something just because I had a coupon. = Money saved because I didn't spend!

My total out of pocket - $8.02

Who says going to the mall has to cost alot of money? :-) Have you found other ways to find free stuff at the mall? I'd love to hear from you!

My friend Tracey told me about this great site -!

You can go to the stores and coupons tab at the top of the page. There you will find an alphabetical list of every store you can possibly think of. Under each store name, you will find a link to coupons available for that store!

I checked it out to help me prepare for my mall challenge. Happy hunting.

My mall Shopping challenge

If you know me at all, you know that I am not a mall shopper. However, today my daughter turns 5 so I'm taking her to Build -A-Bear in the mall. While there, I am going to see how much free stuff I can pick up.

My plans are to spend no more than $10 today (including Build-A-bear) by using all my coupons. I'll let you know tonight how it goes.

If you scroll down to the bottom of that email, you will see a link that says "receive a free check instead".

This is my 2nd check I've gotten from them. I'll let you know when I get the next email with the free $ link!

Note: I have never actually ordered a magazine from this company, but I love their free check!

Free Kindle for PC and free ebooks

Wow! This is the day for book deals, huh?

All you do is download it, then go here to download free books (note: not all Kindle ebooks are free, but there are quite a few choices). You must have an account to access this deal. Become a Bzz Agent!

Interested in being a BzzAgent? Send me an email and I'll send you a free invitation. It is of course free. The 'campaigns' don't come often at first but I have just been accepted into my 3rd.

Back in May, I received the Off Clip-On and Mosquito Lamp.
2 weeks ago, I received the Zyrtec Allergy medicine
In 3 weeks, I will receive Aveeno Baby Shampoo and Diaper Rash Cream.

It takes quite awhile to get invited to do the first campaing, but I figure it's worth a few minutes to get the chance at free stuff.

Children's Zyrtec Easy Dosing Product Review

I am a BzzAgent. That means that periodically I receive products to review and test. (You might remember that last summer I was sent the Off Clip-On and Mosquito Lamp to test and keep for free).

This month I was sent a box of Children's Zyretec Allergy perfect measure. This medicine is 10 individually wrapped pre-filled spoons. They are perfect to drop in your bag so you have the medicine with you whenever you need it. They also included a stack of $3.00 coupons for me to share.

Have you ever used this product? What did you think about it?

Selling stuff on

I've had several people ask me how I make money online. Here's one of the ways I make some extra cash online! Maybe it will help you get started too. I sell books, cds, dvds, games etc at

Here's what I do to determine if something is worth selling on Amazon..
  1. I search for the title on Amazon.
  2. Then I check the used/new price it is selling for. My rule of thumb is to deduct $2.50 from whatever the lowest price is. That will tell me what I will potentially make as profit. If the lowest price (doesn't matter condition) is under $5.00, I usually don't mess with it because I would only make a potential profit of $2.50 and I would still have to have shipping supplies. Make sense? (see bottom of article to see what I do if it's not worth selling on Amazon). There are no fees to list but Amazon will charge a fee when it sells. But they will also give you a credit to supposedly offset the cost of shipping.
  3. Once I determine that an item is worth selling, I login to my account.
  4. Type in the title.
  5. Click on the "used or new" button underneath the Amazon new price.
  6. Over on the right of the new page, you will see a button that says 'sell yours here'.
  7. Click on "sell yours here'.
  8. New screen - you must fill in the 'select condition' option
  9. Fill in the box with an accurate description of your item (Does it have scratches or tears? Bent edges? markings on inside cover etc....)
  10. Say 'continue'
  11. Next page you will need to enter your price. (I ALWAYS undercut the lowest price because the lowest price (regardless of condition) will be on top of the list and be seen first.) If I think my item is still better than the described item in lowest price, I STILL undercut the price by at least a dime. I want my item to sell and I want it to be seen first!) There will be a little chart showing you what your earnings will be if and when your item sells.
Remember..... Amazon will take a couple of dollars commission for selling but they will credit you a couple of dollars to 'cover your shipping charge'. You CANNOT change this commision from Amazon and you CANNOT charge more for shipping. Just remember that you will have to pay for shipping yourself. Hopefully the shipping credit covers the cost. (Usually it does, but not always. That is just part of the game)
  12. You will get a new screen that tells you to confirm your listing.
  13. You will receive an email telling you it has been listed.
  14. Now you wait to get an email notifying you that it has been sold. I've had things sell within 24 hours. But I've also listed things that never sell. Just depends on the item and the demand.
  15. As soon as you get an email telling you it has been sold, you must mail it within 3 days.
  16. You MUST log back in to your account and click on 'confirm shipment'.
  17. Once a month (or so), Amazon will directly deposit your earnings into your checking account.

I LOVE selling on Amazon and think it is often better than Ebay because you don't have to list pictures etc. You just go with the titles and the information they already have.

Hopefully this will help you guys out and get you started earning a little bit of extra cash for Christmas.

***** If you have a book, cd, dvd, or game system game that is not worth $$ on Amazon, there are still ways to turn that item into a profit for you. Be watching and I'll post later my next step to change unwanted media items into something I can use for my family!

Coupons - just for asking (again!)

I recently decided to contact a few more companies and see what kind of response I would get. Sometimes I get great responses! ... and sometimes not. But I keep trying. Here's a few of my latest contact reports....

  • I emailed SC Johnson (makers of Glade, Windex, etc); Thanked them for their products and requested coupons. Here's where to contact them.

    Got this response:

How thoughtful of you to tell us how much you like our products that make your home smell better and help you clean. I'm happy to hear they worked great for you. We work hard to offer products that satisfy consumers, like you; and your positive feedback lets us know our efforts are paying off. Because we value you as a loyal consumer, and appreciate your thoughtful comments, I am sending a packet of dollar off coupons for some of our newest products to your home address. There are coupons for cleaning products as well as fragrance products. Please feel free to give these products a try, and we hope they will find a place in your home. Have a wonderful day

Less than a week later - I had a stack of coupons from SC Johnson!!!!!

  • Called Bounce customer service because one of my bounce bars that sticks in the dryer had popped off after only 3 runs. They immediately apologized and offered to send me a free coupon for a replacement bounce Dryer bar. (Found number on back of package)
  • Called to request coupons for O Charleys Honey Mustard. After getting a ton of no answers, I finally ended up with an email from customer relations - sorry! no coupons available! :-(

Oh well.... sometimes I get great results and sometimes not. But it's always worth a try!

Save-A-Lot coupons and 'rules'

I very rarely shop at Save-A-Lot because it's across town and off my regular path. However, this $5 coupon convinced me to try it out. I found a super helpful cashier who shares my love for coupons. Here's what I learned:

You can stack Save-A-Lot coupons with manufacturers coupon (at least at the Danville store)! Here's an example:
  • Kelloggs Apple Jacks cereal was on sale for 2.55
  • I used the $1.00 Save-A-Lot coupon from their website
  • I used a $1.00 manufacturers coupon I had in my notebook
  • Total price for a box of cereal - .55!

Here's the hitch in my opinion..... Save-A-Lot carries alot of its own personal brands so most of my coupons don't work there since they are for more mainstream brands. But, if you shop there often, you will probably start to recognize particular brands they do carry.

Click here to sign up for a $5.00 off $20 purchase at Save-A-Lot!

While on their site, click on 'printable coupons' so you print off extra coupons just for Save-A-Lot.

Congrats! - We have a giveaway winner.

Congrats to #4 - Slbragg. You're the winner. I'm hoping to have more giveaways soon!

$5 off $5 purchase at Things Remembered

Here's a coupon for $5 off a $5 purchase at Things Remembered. This is going to be tough to find a free item but if you are near a mall with this store, it's definitely worth a shot. Make sure you go straight to the back of the store for the clearance items. You may be able to find something there.

Another giveaway - Fiber One Toaster Pastries

Don't forget to enter this giveaway!

Here's another great giveaway from My Blog Spark. They sent me 2 Fiber One Maple Brown Sugar Toaster pastries (which were a huge hit in our house), a little cooler bag (which is perfect size for 3 juice cups that I constantly carry with me), an insulated drink cup and a calendar/journal.

The fun part is that they are sending one to a lucky reader. All you have to do is leave a comment below with your email address.

As usual, the winner will be chosen randomly by my kids. I could go have a number drawn by a computer generator..... but this way my kids get to be a part of the blogging experience.

For an additional entry, subscribe to the blog. (How do you do that? Just click on the right of the blog where it says 'subscribe'.) Then leave a comment telling me you subscribed. If you are already a subscriber, just leave that note in the comment section.

For a third entry, leave a comment with a link to another place you go looking for deals. Make sure you leave your name and email address too.

Giveaway ends on Thursday at noon.

Coupons, Cashiers & Cudos!

This is a random thought about coupons & cashiers. At Danville Kroger yesterday, I used the self checkout with under 20 items. I, of course, had a huge stack of coupons. The cashiers both laughed and said that they never minded seeing me come through their checkout because even though I had tons of coupons, they never had to worry about my coupons working. That was a huge 'cudo' to me and it made my day.

Why does this matter to you? Because each time one of us 'super couponers' use coupons we are paving the way for the next 'new couponer'. If we are nasty, impatient and sneaky with our coupons, we are making it harder for the next customer who wants to use legit coupons.

What I learned from this:
  1. Always check my expiration dates before I get to the checkout lane.
  2. If there are 'free' coupons, try to write down the amount that will be free so the cashier doesn't have to go searching through a long receipt for the amount.
  3. Always make sure the coupon matches the purchase
  4. If there is a questionable coupon that I think should match, I usually ask the cashier if they will at least scan it and see if it works. Most of the time the cashier will try it and see what happens. (Danville Kmart is awesome at this for me). If the coupon doesn't work, alot of times I will just ask to void the item off.
  5. Try to keep a smile and pleasant tone. Your approach will set the tone for the transaction.
  6. When the cashier won't work with you (this happened the other day at Stanford RiteAid), I just voided the transaction, thanked them anyway and walked away. I was disappointed that it didn't work and I knew I was right but I still stayed pleasant.
  7. Last option..... if you know you are right and the cashier is determined to be difficult.... wait and call the manager later when you are calm and talk to the boss to explain the situation,

See you in the checkout lane - with lots of coupons of course!

Best Local Playgrounds - according to my 3 kids!

There is no school today for my son.... and there's supposed to be sunshine and 60 degrees! What does that mean? It means a day at the playground! Here are some of the places I know of that are cool!

Do you have a great park you like to visit? I'd love to post your favorite places to play. If there is any interest, I may try to expand this section of the blog to include pictures of the playgrounds with directions from mapquest. I love getting my kids out and letting them really be kids! The best thing about local parks? They're FREE and they get us moving!

But where are the coolest local playgrounds?

  • Stanford, KY: Logan-Hubble Memorial Park (about 1 mile north of Stanford and a mile or so off the main road out in the country). A great modern colorful playground, swings, a small toddler playground off to the side - Large lake for fishing, tons of picnic pavilions and tables, and a bonus - there is an authentic seesaw, merry-go-round and bouncer! (These play pieces are starting to rot becuase they have been there so long, but they were a huge hit with my kids after we played on the new stuff). Very quiet park. There were only 4 cars the whole time we were there.
  • Harrodsburg, KY: A great wooden playground up beside the hospital (not to be confused with Anderson Dean Park off the bypass which I have never yet been to). This wooden playground is older but gives the kids a great chance to use their imagination. Scale of 1-5? Rated a huge 5 by all 3 kids!
  • Danville, KY: Millennium Park - Beautiful 2 mile hilly, paved walking trail, 3 playgrounds, pond for feeding ducks, skate park area, basketball goals, lots of soccer fields, Excellent local park!
  • Hustonville, KY: 2 playground areas (one is blue & red - more modern) and the other area is an older wooden playground - kind of small but tons of fun for the kids. Beautiful little creek runs beside playground. Has old tennis court and basketball court but they're not upkept (lots of weeds). The playground is very close to the school so this is a great place to play when we're coming from or going to the pick up line.
  • Junction City, KY: 2 playground areas, nice flat walking path, Lots of swings. This playground even has an old time merry-go-round! A great local area for fun.
  • Lexington, KY: Jacobson Park. When we go to Lexington, this is a huge hit! There is a mega-huge wooden playground/castle area for the kids! I don't like to go there unless I have another adult with me - it is so large I always feel like I'm going to lose my kids. A huge lake (you can rent small paddle boats in season though we never have). Huge fields for play, ducks, pavilions. The highlight is the playground though! Rated a huge 5!
  • Louisville, KY: Iroquois Park. A great playground area (this is a handicapped accessible playground too). It has recently been built and renovated for the kids. Excellent playground! There is also a small 'splash' area in the summer where the local kids wear swimsuits and run and play in the sprinklers. Huge Huge great park!

I have been to some great playgrounds in several other states but these are the highlights within 15 minutes of my house.

Be watching. My Blog Spark has already sent me another giveaway that I get to start tomorrow morning!

"So you wanna save $$$$?" The Challenge!

OK folks..... the challenge is on. Can I help my friend, who shops at Target and Walmart, save $$$$ this week on her grocery bill? Since I don't shop at Target, I may need some input from you Target shoppers.

Here's three definite deals that you should be able to snag at Walmart as early as tonight! (To save on lots of items you will need coupons from other sources (newspapers, magazines, phone calls etc. Just keep watching the blog for a few days and you will see where you can get more coupons!) Most of the time, you should be able to click on the link again and print it twice (double the deals - double the savings).

Remember: It's always smartest to use a coupon for the smallest size item. That way you save the biggest possible amount of money.

Happy Birthday Month to me.....

My birthday's this month.... That means my inbox is full of free offers from lots of restaurants.

So, here's some of the free stuff (and almost free) that I got in my email box!

Samples & coupons at PG

If you haven't requested these recently, Click here to request samples and coupons from Proctor & Gamble. I tried to request mine, but it says I have already gotten mine this month. It might be worth a try if you're not sure.

Have you loaded your ecoupons recently at Upromise?

Have you loaded your ecoupons from Upromise lately? There is a great 1.00 coupon for Nestle fun size candy available. Just login to your account here. Then click on Ways to Earn, ecoupons. There are new ecoupons every month. Remember, these coupons don't come off your receipt. Instead they accumulate for your child's (or grandchild, or nephew, or friend, or yourself) college fund. (If you don't have someone you want to earn for, you can always add my kids name :-)

At the rate I'm going, I hope to buy at least one textbook for each of my 3 kids when they are ready for college. (They're only 2, 4 & 7). My upromise account is growing slowly - very slowly. But I am at $8.50 - so considering I have about 12 years before I need the money, I hope to see it grow in time to help out a little.

You can sign up here. I don't shop from but if you do, you can see your savings grow faster. For me, I prefer to start my online shopping through ebates, or mrrebates so I can access the money now.

Here's what we have purchased online that cost me NOTHING!

In the past 10 days, we have ordered these things online and paid NOTHING out of our pocket. (I had money in account from swagbucks, paypal and a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card)

  • New windshield wipers for our truck
  • Laser pointer for my husband's work
  • New floor mats for the truck
  • 5 new ink cartridges for our printer
  • Set of Little Einstein board books for my son's Christmas
  • an 80 piece set of marble racers - costs $24.95 at Barnes & Noble online

How have I done that? I use swagbucks constantly! I have sold a few random things on ebay, and I received some money back from where I had shopped online back in the summer.

Here's how you can get started making money that will allow you to make purchases online that won't cost you a penny!

  • Sign up for swagbucks here. Or if you are already a member, download the toolbar so you'll remember to search there EVERY time you search for something. The search results aren't always the same as google, but I'm willing to put up with a few extra seconds so I can see the money add up! If you are already earning regularly, bump up those earnings by referring some friends or family under your account so you will get a bonus buck every time they earn one too! How do you do that? Email me, and I'll walk you through it.

  • I always do any online shopping by starting at or That way I earn a percentage back in cash. If you haven't signed up yet, when you do sign up and complete your first transaction, you will get a $5.00 bonus start up!

  • I sell dvds, used computer or game system games, or books on Not everything will sell on Amazon, but media and books usually do pretty well depending on what the item is. Interested in selling on Amazon? Email me and I'll send you a response with all the details you need.

  • I sell random small items on ebay to pad my paypal account. Not everything will sell well on ebay but there are some things I do really well with. I sold a few kids game system books and games recently and made a nice little profit. Again, I will be glad to show you how to get started on that if you are interested.

There are ways to make legit money online to help your family. I will never be rich from the things I do online - but I am helping my family. How are you saving money for your family?
